When exiting a business it is fair to expect some considerable costs to be incurred. For Paul Bowdrey however, those costs were more than covered by his new accountancy firm Fish Partnership, who recovered a considerable amount of tax that he had overpaid.

Paul Bowdrey is the creative director of Three Eyes Limited, an advertising business serving the industrial, music and allied sectors with additional skills in franchise brand development, all from his purpose built studio at home in Berkshire. However, before Three Eyes was incorporated, Paul owned a number of very successful design companies and today works alone with no desire to employ people. “I can't imagine not working as a designer,” he says. “If you don’t love design, you don’t do it. I love what I do.”

Before Paul began his current venture, he decided to sell his shares in his previous companies to a business partner. The businesses were flourishing, and so the firm’s existing accountant, whom Paul had trusted for over 20 years, decided to stay with the exiting group, meaning Paul, as a departing director, required a new accountancy firm to handle his exit strategy.

Paul heard about the Fish Partnership via an exceedingly positive recommendation, and consequently engaged their services. During the process of selling Paul’s shares, the Fish Partnership’s Paul Laird uncovered that Paul had been paying considerably more tax than he should have been. Fish Partnership recovered the full overpayment, which amounted to more than the cost of selling his portion of the businesses.

The Fish Partnership is now permanently retained and takes care of all things financial on Paul’s behalf, in both a personal and business capacity. “It never ceases to amaze me how little tax I pay,” says Paul. “They are extremely tax efficient and are without doubt the most professional firm of accountants I have ever had the pleasure to work with. The fees they charge are generally more than covered in savings thanks to their efficient tax planning.”

Paul views Paul Laird as a business adviser as well as an accountant, contacting him on an ad hoc basis on top of their quarterly VAT returns and annual accounts meetings. “Everything the firm has ever done has been positive. Their advice is constructive and beneficial. Paul Laird’s broad knowledge means that he can advise me on a huge range of issues and industries. If there’s anything he doesn’t know off the top of his head, he’ll make it his business to find out.” According to Paul there is no reason not to recommend the Fish Partnership, with every aspect of their service reinforcing his implicit trust in the firm.
