Christmas Cheer Still Lingering

Local accountants Fish Partnership donated cash towards an event for the elderly or lonely, at the end of last year. Although memories of Christmas are rapidly fading, with many people flocking to the travel agents to rid them of their January blues, elderly residents of Loudwater are still tucking into their Christmas hampers, which they received from St Peter's Church. The Church provided Christmas lunch for residents who would have otherwise spent the day alone, funded by sponsorship from local businesses.

St Peter’s Church catered for around 30 residents this year, although illness tainted the festivities slightly, with some of the residents not able to make it to the Church. The organisers combated this by boxing up ten meals, and delivering them to the residents who weren’t well enough to attend.

Attendees enjoyed a choice of melon and raspberry coulis or smoked salmon and prawns to start, roast turkey, beef or gammon, complete with trimmings, as a main course, and Christmas pudding or chocolate torte for dessert. Wine and sherry flowed, and the group enjoyed a visit from Father Christmas after their meal. Each member of the group was given a gift, a Christmas cake and a food hamper to take home with them.

Organiser Ruth Walne orchestrated every detail of the celebrations down to the individual Christmas cakes people took home. “The feedback was wonderful,” she says. “All of the residents seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day, and most sat together for a long time just talking. The sponsorships received from local firms covered the cost of everything, and I even managed to pay for a taxi to bring a lady in an electric wheelchair to the church, which meant her being able to get out of the house for Christmas lunch.”

Among these firms is local accountants Fish Partnership, who have donated funds to support the meal for the last few years. Partner Martin Sheehy comments: “It’s important to pull together as a community, to ensure elderly and lonely people are able celebrate the festivities. This sense of community is often forgotten in the New Year. The organisers create a magical Christmas every year, for people who otherwise would not get the chance to celebrate.”
