Fish Partnership's Denise Cook Believes in Mumbo Jumbo
Denise Cook of Buckinghamshire-based accountancy firm Fish Partnership is acting as Business Advisor for a group of boys involved in the Young Enterprise scheme. The company is called Mumbo Jumbo Comics, and is in the early stages of its business career.
Held over one academic year, boys from year 12 of the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe were encouraged to participate in the scheme by collaborating to put together an idea for a company. They pitched their ideas and now, the 6 founders of Mumbo Jumbo Comics are executing their venture, with the help of accountant Denise.
Denise meets with the boys on a weekly basis, for an after-school meeting that lasts just over an hour. Denise’s accounting background is put to good use, with the boys currently working on a fully comprehensive business plan. Denise has been explaining different aspects of finance and accountancy to the boys, including VAT and share capital. As all the boys are directors of the firm and have to own at least one share in the company.
The managing director drafts an agenda for the weekly meeting, to which the other directors (including sales and marketing director, operations director, finance director, IT director and secretarial director) must contribute in the meeting.
“It’s a fantastic learning experience for the boys,” says Denise. “The company has an official bank account with HSBC, and the boys have a series of deadlines they are expected to meet. They are learning about time management and how you constantly have to adjust plans and be flexible.”
The boys are hoping to complete a print run before Christmas. The company plans to make profits by selling advertising space in the comic to local high street businesses such as Topman and Costa Coffee. The comic will then be distributed free.
The Fish Partnership have been happy to allow Denise to attend the weekly meetings, which will last for the duration of the academic year, to support the local boys’ enterprise.
